Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
