A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
